James Junior Smith

James Junior Smith, age 88, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Friday, May 18. 2018 in the comfort of his family’s presence in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana.

He was born December 26, 1929 in Logansport, Indiana, the second oldest child of Fred and Jensie Smith. He married Mary Alice Smith November 15, 1947 in Mishawaka, Indiana.  After more than sixty-five years, she preceded him in death 2013.  He was also preceded by his parents; one sister, Jean Austin; three brothers, Doug Smith, Dick Smith and Charles Smith, missing in action during the Korean Conflict.

James was the very best father in the world.  His family says, “None better.”  He was a farmer and the original 4-H leader of Calvin Township.  For the past twenty years he mowed with the lawn service owned by his son and grandson, S and S Lawn Service.  He was an avid fisherman.  James loved his church, becoming a member January 25, 2013, with his grandson Eddie Charles having the privilege of baptizing him.

James will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by two daughters, Dorinda (Terry) Charles of Dowagiac, Rebecca (Tom) Cooper of Cassopolis; two sons, James (Karen) Smith , Sr., and Mark Smith, both of Cassopolis; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren, with one more on the way; one sister, Barbara Emmert of Mishawaka; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather Monday, May 21, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in First Pentecostal Church, 27341 US 12 West, Edwardsburg. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the church with calling one hour prior.

Mr. Smith will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Mary, in Calvin Township Cemetery.
