Marguerite Brown

Margaret Marie “Marguerite” Brown of Niles, Michigan died peacefully on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Woodland Terrace of Longmeadow having achieved the remarkable age of one-hundred-one years.

She was born on May 28, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward J. and Bertha A. (Borst) O’Brien, came to Niles in 1932, and was graduated from Niles High School in 1938.  She was employed as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Aberdeen, Maryland during World War II, was later employed as an operator at the Michigan Bell office in Niles, and was retired from the offices of the Niles Community Schools.

Marg was a member of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Niles, the Monday Night Running Club, and the Four Flags Garden Club.  She enjoyed dancing to the big bands that performed in this area and in Chicago; and traveling, golf, reading, needlework, bridge, and her many friends.

She was married on March 30, 1944 at Camp Butner, near Durham, North Carolina to William Baxter “Bud” Brown with whom she celebrated the remarkable Sixty-eighth anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on May 7, 2012.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jack O’Brien and sisters, Faith Martin, Eileen Woods, and Gerry Baker.

Surviving family includes her children, James H. (& Terry) Brown and Deborah A. (& Charles) Dwan, both of Niles; grandson Ronald W. (& Yana) Brown; great-granddaughters Ava and Vivian Brown; Marg’s sister, Bonnie Huffman of Niles; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Marguerite Brown at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, 203 South Lincoln Avenue in Niles by the Rev. Christian Johnston of the parish.  Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.
