Thomas Wesley Hammond, known affectionately as Tom to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, in Niles, Michigan. Born on January 21, 1949, in Lexington, Alabama, Tom was a beacon of light and love to all who knew him. His warm presence and generous spirit will be deeply missed.

Tom was the beloved son of the late Wallace Harrison and Ella Irene (Thorne) Hammond. His life was a testament to the values of family, service, and community that were instilled in him from a young age. Tom proudly served his country in the army, during the Vietnam War, a period of his life that shaped much of his character and work ethic. After his military service, he settled in Niles, where he became a cherished member of the community.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family, including his children: Tom Hammond of Mishawaka, Indiana, Doris (Eric) Brown of Georgetown, Kentucky, Dan (Lisa) Hammond of Cutler, Indiana, Barb (Mike) Nichols of Niles, Michigan, Frank Hammond of Niles, Michigan and Greg (Emily) Hammond. Each of them carries forward the lessons of kindness and resilience that their father embodied.

Though he was predeceased by his brothers, James and Freddie Hammond, and his sister Regina Anglemyer, Tom’s memory will be kept alive by his sister Donna Fisher of Niles. His influence extended to his nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the tales of his adventures and the lessons of his faith.

Tom’s interests were as varied as they were engaging. He had a passion for playing cards, assembling puzzles, and the thrill of the casino. His adventurous spirit led him on numerous trips with his family, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Shopping was more than a pastime for Tom; it was an opportunity to connect with his loved ones and share in the joy of finding the perfect item.

A regular at car shows and semi shows, Tom’s fascination with vehicles was more than a hobby—it was a reflection of his mechanical aptitude and his love for tinkering. He could often be found fixing things around the house, a handyman who took pride in his ability to solve problems and help others. In keeping with Tom’s willingness to always give of himself, he took great joy in playing Santa for anyone at any age through the years.

Tom’s love for animals, especially dogs, was profound. His gentle nature and caring heart made him a favorite among pets, and he found great joy in their companionship. Above all, Tom’s greatest love was his family. He was a loving father, a wise guide, and a steadfast presence in the lives of those he held dear.
