
Dickie Wayne Fortner, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 8, 2024. He was born on January 2, 1937, to Robert and Mary (Johnson) Fortner in Saint Charles, Virginia. On May 16, 1964, he married the former Lynn Marie Hands, and they shared a memorable 60 years together.
A memorial service for Dickie will take place at a later date. For a more lasting memory, donations in Dickie’s name can be made out to Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Newell Chapel, Decatur.
Dickie was a proud veteran of the United States Army and worked as Military Police. After his time in the service, he worked for Ford Motor Company for 34 years eventually becoming a superintendent. Dickie was also a Lieutenant of the Crete Township Fire Department for 32 years. He was a life member of Crete Masonic Lodge #763, a Shriner and member of Orak Motor Patrol, and a member of Saladin Motor Patrol. His love of Harleys extended to him also being a life member of H.O.G. He is remembered fondly by his family for his helpful and caring demeanor. Dickie was always there to reach out with a helping hand. He was good man who knew how to do the right thing.
Dickie was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister. Dickie is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Fortner; children Thomas (Christel), Richard, and Nicole (Alex); grandchildren Richard II (Amanda), Caceti, Kal, and Griffin; great grandchildren Richard III, Benedict, and MaddiLynn; and three bonus grandchildren Rachel, Orian, and Brian. Two sisters Margo (Larry), Pam (Paul) and many nieces and nephews.
