
Helen Louise Johnson, 74 of Benton Harbor, went home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2024.
Helen was a child of the king, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, cousin and friend. She was born to the late Thelma Thomas and Walter Cox, July 9, 1950 in Memphis, TN. Helen attended Barrett Chapel Elementary in Arlington, TN, Lester High School in Memphis, and moved to Benton Harbor in 1972 where she graduated from Benton Harbor High School.
Helen latter attended LMC and studied law for a few years, but her passion was in the healthcare and daycare fields.
Helen met Felton Johnson Sr. in 1974, and they united in holy matrimony on April 21, 1984. 12 years later, they renewed their vows on April 21, 1996. Helen and Felton traveled the world together, when you saw one you saw the other. They were together 44 years.
Helen’s favorite scriptures were Psalms 23 and Psalms 27. Her favorite song was don’t worry be happy. She loved God and she loved the gospel. Helen loved teaching and serving in the ministry. She was a great teacher. Helen helped others as a pillar of this community, serving 52 years in the ministry. She loved her pastors and leaders. Bishop Nichols was her spiritual father. She was a true woman of God, and a faithful servant. Her favorite quote was, “rise, shine and give God the glory.”
Helen was employed at Mercy Hospital, Shoreham Terrace Nursing Home and other nursing homes, where she worked as a healthcare aid worker. She was a cashier at Kmart and she also worked in daycare taking care of the children.
Helen was an amazing woman, a trailblazer, and she loved her family and friends. Everyone she encountered she made a connection with. Helen was very loving, kind, and was loved by so many.
Helen leaves to cherish precious memories in the hearts of her children, Keran Young, Javerne Wright, Katrina Wright, Phyllis Johnson, Felton Johnson Jr, Rosie Johnson and Sonya Lucas; sisters, Minnie, Wooten, Mary Thomas, Erma Thompson, Christine Thompson; brothers, Rocky Thomas, Andre Thomas, and Walter Cox Jr.; 32 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, God children and God grandchildren, family and friends.
Helen was proceeded in death by her husband, Felton Johnson, Sr.; mother, Thelma, Thomas; father, Walter Cox; stepfather, Rocky Thomas Sr.; sister, Janice Cruz; brother, Derrict Thomas; a son; special goddaughter, Rudine Clark.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Robbins Brothers Funeral Home.
