Notre Dame Lands Elite 2027 QB Teddy Jarrard, Beating Out Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan

Notre Dame football picked up a big win on the recruiting trail yesterday as QB Teddy Jarrard announced his commitment to the Irish’s class of 2027. Jarrard chose Notre Dame over Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect from Kennesaw, GA is listed as the #2 quarterback in the class of 2027. Jarrard still has two more years of high school ball. Last fall, Jarrard led North Cobb Christian to an 11-2 record while completing 222 of 323 passes for 2,762 yards and 31 touchdowns. He transferred to North Cobb High School for this season. Jarrard is Notre Dame’s third commitment in the class of 2027, joining LB Ellis McGaskin of Mobile, AL and long snapper Sean Kraft of Asheville, NC.

USC-Notre Dame rivalry expires in ’26, with no sure bet it will go beyond that

With the future of the USC-Notre Dame football rivalry uncertain, Trojans coach Lincoln Riley on Thursday expressed his desire to retain the game — under the right circumstances. The matchup is currently scheduled only through 2026, and Riley said that while it’s important to him, the differences between the two programs — be it conference affiliation or where they fall in the eventual College Football Playoff model — will have an impact on whether the game continues, as well as when in the schedule it’s played. The teams have played every year since 1926 (the exceptions being 1943-45 due to World War II and the 2020 COVID season). While Notre Dame has been willing to work on a long-term deal to extend the rivalry, USC would prefer a shorter deal to allow for flexibility.

Dayton tops SB Cubs

The South Bend Cubs fell to the Dayton Dragons last night 7-4, despite two home runs from Carter Trice. Even with the loss, the Cubs remain 2.5 games back of the second-half playoff spot in the West Division after Beloit’s loss to Great Lakes. South Bend and Dayton will continue the series tonight with first pitch at 7:05 PM. (6:45 PM on WSBT)

Tigers slump continues

Ernie Clement and Joey Loperfido hit back-to back hit home runs in the fifth inning to help the surging Toronto Blue Jays rout the slumping Detroit Tigers 11-4 on Thursday night in a matchup of first-place teams going in opposite directions. The AL East-leading Blue Jays have won 19 of their last 24 games, and the AL Central-leading Tigers have lost 10 of 11.

Sox and Cubs were off, set for series this weekend

Both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox were off last night. They renew their Crosstown Classic rivalry this weekend on the South Side. First pitch tonight is at 7:40 PM.

Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan passes

Hulk Hogan, the star who took professional wrestling to the national mainstream and became the biggest money-making draw in the history of the industry, died Thursday at the age of 71. Authorities responded to a call at Hogan’s home in Clearwater, FL about a cardiac arrest. Hogan was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Born Terry Bollea, he had been struggling with several health issues in recent years, including a problematic, lingering back injury from his wrestling days. Hogan was in the main event of seven of the first eight WrestleMania cards, including his grudge match with Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3. In 1996, with interest in him as a hero waning, Hogan pulled off the biggest heel turn in wrestling history as a second act when he formed the New World Order with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
