David Gene Spangler “Spanky”, 61, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026 in Paw Paw, MI. He was born February 25, 1964 in Munsey, IN to Jerry and Linda (Burris) Spangler.
Before Dave’s passing, he was able to spend memorable time with his son, enjoying his favorite treats and watching football together. Dave always had a fondness for orange pop, swirl ice cream, and other consumable “treats” grown from a green thumb. He was a die-hard University of Michigan football fan, and an avid Nascar enthusiast, favoring Dale Earnhardt, Sr., and Jr., during their racing days. If he wasn’t watching football or racing, you could find Dave at the bowling alley, where he loved to spend time with his friends.
His son, Colby, just knows his dad is up in heaven with his dad, Jerry, fishing away! Dave and Jerry are saving a spot for Rita, who was always by their side at the lake.
Dave will be missed by his son, Colby Spangler; his sisters, Rita Spangler, Tamara Spangler, and Michelle Spangler; his nieces and nephews, Danielle Hurst, Kevin Donovan, Patrick Donovan, and Amy Mellema; and several great nieces and great nephews.
He is preceded in death by his beloved dog, Buggy; his best friends, Timmy Smith, and Bud Gilette; his parents; and his grandma, Pearl Burris.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 22, 2026 beginning at 1pm at the VFW, 560 N. Phelps St., Decatur. Memorial contributions may be given to the University of Michigan Athletic Development, www.support.mgoblue.com.
