
Betty Jane Hershberger, 86, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Her life began September 7, 1939 in Cassopolis, Michigan the tenth of thirteen children born to Joseph and Minnie Sheteron. She married James Adrian Hershberger September 5, 1959 in Cassopolis, Michigan. After almost fifty-nine years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 2018.
Betty attended and graduated from Cassopolis High School in 1959. She started attending Diamond Cove Missionary Church in 1955, making her the oldest living member of the church. Her faith was vitally important to her. Betty enjoyed taking her family fishing all over the state. She was a home maker for most of her life but spent several years as a teacher’s aid at Cassopolis Public Schools. Betty and Jim purchased a cabin in Baldwin in 2003. This became a center piece for the family. She loved being outdoors, rafting, canoeing and camping. She could often be found outside mowing the lawn and gardening, or inside, quilting, crocheting, knitting and canning. She expressed her creativity by being a floral designer for Theresa of Edwardsburg and making cakes for birthdays and weddings. Most of all she enjoyed her family, especially going out with her grandchildren.
Betty will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Sherry Hunt of Edwardsburg, Becky (Kevin) Wright of Cassopolis; three sons, James (Teresa) Hersberger of Vandalia, twins, Keith Hershberger, Kevin (Jill) Hershberger, both of Cassopolis; ten grandchildren; Sherry Linn (Robert) Bloss, Cody Pappas, Stephanie Hershberger Knepple, Dan (Wren) Hershberger, James W. (Allison Elrod) Hershberger, Ruth Ann Wright, Kayla Hershberger, Kyle (Kaylee Perrigo) Hershberger, Andrew (Calie) Hershberger, Arminda Hershberger Dussel; twelve great grandchildren, Camren Pappas, Brody Knepple, William Hershberger, Wyatt Hershberger, Kevin Bruneau, Kaden Bruneau, Dean Dussel, Everly Dussel, Merida Dussel, Jack Hershberger, Zane Hershberger, Ty Below; two brothers, Paul (Ellen) Sheteron, Roy (Mary) Sheteron; her good friend and cousin, June Westphal and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and two sisters.
Family and friends will gather Thursday, February 26, 2026 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Wagner Family Funerals 202 North Broadway, Cassopolis. Her service will be Friday, February 27, 2026 10:00 A.M. in Diamond Cove Missionary Church, 22830 Diamond Cove Road, Cassopolis, with the Reverend Charles Keller officiating. Betty will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in a private graveside service in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Sumnerville, Michigan.
