Thomas “Tom” Fortier, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully of natural causes on May 2, 2024, in his hometown of Niles, Michigan. Born on June 30, 1962, to the late Denis C. and Alice F. (Tucker) Fortier, Tom’s 61 years were marked by a deep love for his family, a passion for the outdoors, and a remarkable ability to bring laughter and joy to those around him.
Tom was a lifelong resident of Niles, where he built a life surrounded by the people and the nature he adored. As a self-employed groundskeeper and landscaper, he not only shaped the beauty of local gardens and parks but also cultivated a strong sense of community through his dedication and friendly demeanor.
Known for his handy skills, Tom could often be found tinkering with anything that caught his fancy. His adventurous spirit led him to embrace a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, frisbee golf, kayaking, and treasure hunting with his trusty metal detector. Tom’s love for nature was as boundless as the Michigan skies he often gazed upon. Tom’s favorite apparel, homemade tie dye t-shirts and cut off shorts will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Family was the cornerstone of Tom’s life. He was a devoted father to his three daughters, Melanie (Brooks) Hand of Berrien Springs, Cori Fortier of Niles, and Raelyn Fortier of Niles. His role as a grandfather to Casey Davis and a great-grandfather to Alice filled him with immense pride and happiness. His playful and funny nature made him the heart of family gatherings, where his stories and jokes would echo amidst the laughter and warmth of his loved ones.
Tom’s siblings, Dennis (Deb) Fortier of Waterford, Michigan, and Roxanne Epperly of Forsythe, Missouri, will remember him as the adventurous and spirited brother who could always be counted on for support and a good chuckle. His presence in their lives was a source of comfort and camaraderie that they will hold dear in his absence. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Denis C. and Alice F. (Tucker) Fortier.
Tom’s family will be remembering him at a later time.
