Jerry Gene Reynolds was born on August 22, 1950 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to the union of Harry and Minnie Reynolds. Jerry was baptized at Progressive Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Daniel E Cook. He later became a member of Mt. Zion MB Church, under the leadership of his father (Pastor Emeritus) Rev. Harry F. Reynolds.
Jerry was a 1968 graduate of Benton Harbor High School and attended Lake Michigan College. He worked at various vocations at Modern Plastics Corporation, Whirlpool Corporation and Heath/Zenith Company.
However, Jerry’s true calling was directly connected to his love of music. At a very early age, he learned the piano by taking lessons in the community. But he taught himself to listen and feel the notes . He taught himself to play “by ear.” While in high school, he and his friends formed a band which was eventually named “Down In The Basement” because that is where they first began to practice…down in the basement of his (Reynolds) home. The band had other names like, “The Damacos” with different local talent/members throughout the years. They played throughout Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois and cut a couple of records. While in Washington DC, Jerry was approached with an opportunity to play professionally but chose to remain loyal to his band members.
An early onset of sickness ended his career, however Jerry continued to play music. With Jerry on the piano and his brother Harry doing the singing, the two of them could often be found spending hours entertaining the family at home, family reunions and during the holidays. Where there was a piano, the two of them were together.
Jerry was humble, “cool” and possessed a very gentle spirit. Coupled with his musical talent, his legacy will be one of strength and courage. Jerry was especially close with his father, who was his devoted care-giver. Their bond was steadfast and unshakeable.
Jerry transitioned from this life March 22, 2017 at the Hanson Hospice Center, Stevensville, MI.
He leaves to cherish his memory: father, Rev. Harry F. Reynolds, of Benton Harbor; son, Lamar (Christy) Phillips of Atlanta GA; sisters, Minnie Sims and Diana (Isiah) Newson of Benton Harbor; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He leaves a special place in the hearts of his nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Robbins Brothers Funeral Home, Benton Harbor.
