
Robert Lee Shepard Sr., beloved husband, father, grandparent, and great-grandparent, passed away on February 20, 2026, in South Bend, Indiana. Born on April 18, 1942, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Robert was a man of great character and humor who left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure to know him.
The son of the late Carl and Ursula (Messimer) Shepard, Robert grew up in a close-knit family with numerous siblings, leaving behind his dear sister Jean Miles, and joining in memory his predeceased siblings Gladys Birczak, Carl, Kenny Shepard, Tom Shepard, Paul Shepard, Jim Shepard, Earl Shepard, Floyd Shepard, Irene Deitrich, and Lucy Vandenburgh.
Robert’s heart found its match when he married Patricia (McGill) Shepard on May 21, 1960, at the Bertrand Bible Church in Niles, Michigan. Their loving union was blessed with three children, Lisa (James) Johnson, Robert (Robin) Shepard Jr., and Carl (Deborah) Shepard, who then gifted them with an abundance of grandchildren: Jessica, Tre’, Jared, Wesley, Bryson, Carl Jr., Jackie, Ashley, Joshua, and Jonathan (Paige); and great-grandchildren: Alice, Elliot, Andrew, James, Colton, Aleaha, Wyatt, Riley, and Blair.
A devout member of the Bertrand Bible Church, Robert served as an usher and demonstrated his unwavering faith through his actions and commitment to his community. Aside from his devotion to faith and family, Robert cherished the outdoors. His love for fishing, camping, and travelling created a host of cherished memories, especially those spent at Jellystone Park in Plymouth with his family, and the joyful summers at his sister Irene’s cottage.
Robert’s life was rich with stories often punctuated by his sharp wit and good humor. His laughter echoed at family gatherings, and his jokes were the highlight of many a conversation. Above all, Robert will be remembered as a pillar of strength, a caring mentor, and a gentle soul who approached life with a warmth in his heart.
