Howard Burris, Jr., age 89, of Vandalia, died peacefully Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in his residence in the comfort of his family’s presence.

He was born December 8, 1927 in Henderson, Kentucky, the middle of five children born to Howard and Sidney Burris, Sr. He married M. Gladys Connell February 10, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois.  She survives.  Howard was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Walter Burris, James Burris, Marianna Cosby and Iola Edmonds.

Howard served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Howard will be greatly missed by family and friends. He leaves to mourn his passing and continue his legacy his wife of sixty seven years, Gladys Burris of Vandalia; their two daughters, Jane E. Bailey Cartwright of Merrillville, Indiana, and Cheryl D. Youngblood of National City, California; their son, Michael A. (Myra) Burris, Sr., of Saint Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Julian W. (Angie Evans) Bailey, Michael (Kiera Leland Burris) Burris, Jr., Jessica Cartwright, Muriel Burris, Maryah Burris, Katherine (Michael) Marquez, Albert Viloria; eleven great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 North Broadway Street, Cassopolis, with the Reverend Rayvon Bufkin officiating. Mr. Burris will be laid to rest in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan when he will be accorded full Military Honors.

The family prefers contributions in Howard’s memory be made to the family.
