United Federal Credit Union Settles Class-Action Case On Overdraft Fees

United Federal Credit Union has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit over overdraft fees. The lawsuit was filed by Tonya Gunter, who says there was enough money in her account on July 23, 2015 to cover her transactions when she was hit with eight overdraft fees for $30 each. In a statement to WSJM News, United says it is one of dozens of credit unions nationwide that have been named in class action overdraft lawsuits and they settled “to avoid the costs, distractions and risks of litigation.” The credit union denies doing anything improper, but “we believe settlement is in the best interests of all our members.” The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Nevada on September 21, 2015, and affected members charged overdraft fees for the first time between August 15, 2010 and September 30, 2018 are potentially eligible for settlement money.
