July 24, 1924 – February 25, 2016

James Woodrow Anderson, 91, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2016 after a long, full life.  The son of immigrants, (Danish born Anten Anderson and Ina Anderson, whose family was from Sweden) he was born in Minot, North Dakota on July 24, 1924.  Upon his father’s death, Ina moved Jim and his two younger brothers back to her family homestead in the UP where they were raised by their independent, hard-working, single mother and under the watchful eye of aunts and an uncle.  They attended the four room country school they could see across the fields from the kitchen window of their home in Metropolitan.  Jim, a good student, tall and athletic, went to Felch Township High School where he played basketball. Irene Phyllis Smith, 89, of South Haven, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born March 5, 1926 to James and Ella (Taylor) Howard in Waukegan, Illinois. Irene graduated from Pontiac Township High School in 1944. Daniel Raymond Simon

Daniel Raymond Simon, 55, of South Haven, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. He was born November 23, 1960 to Raymond and Florence (Soltys) Simon in Grand Rapids. Dan graduated from West Catholic High School in Grand Rapids in 1979. He then went on to graduate from Ferris State University in 1984 with a degree in pharmacy and later served as adjunct faculty. Dan owned and operated Value Drugs in South Haven as well as pharmacies in Hamilton, Plainwell, and Allegan for 30 years. He married Lisa Olewinski on October 26, 1990 at St. Alphonsus Church in Grand Rapids. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions and Red Wings as well as Michigan State University. He loved hunting. He was a member of the St. Basil Catholic Church and was a 4th degree, Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the St. Basil Catholic School Board, taught classes in CCD, confirmation, and baptism but what Dan was most proud of was his family.... ...Read Full Story

Gertrude Wegener Busick July 25, 1920 – February 23, 2016 Gertrude was born in Chicago, IL to George and Gertrude Wegener. Gertrude worked at Olson Rugs and the “famous” Marshall Fields in Chicago and met her husband, Glen William Busick, while visiting her aunt and uncle’s farm in Dowagiac, MI. They were married January 13, 1945. Gertrude is survived by her children, Ruth (Jim) Crum, Alan (Terri) Busick, and Paul (Wanda) Busick; 9 grandchildren, Jeremy (Emma Sisti) Clemans, Rachel (Nick) Clemans-Bonnell, Sarah (Josh) Forrester, Laura (Ryan) Kiner, Joanna Busick, Joel Busick, Erika Busick, Benjamin (Andrea) Busick, and Rebecca Busick; along with 15 great and 5 step great grandchildren. Her brother, Philip also survives. Those who have gone before include an infant daughter in December 1945, husband, Glen, August 1980; and siblings, Ernest, Margaret, Anne, Jonathan, and George. There will be no visitation per her request and graveside services will be Friday, February 26, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac, MI. Patricia Hardman Kohlmann, age 90, a longtime resident of Benton Harbor, MI, died on the 22nd of February, 2016, in Lansing, MI. Patricia was born on March 2, 1925, in South Bend, IN, to Fay and Everett Hardman. She grew up in South Bend with her sister, Joan Hans.
Patricia requested a private funeral service. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at the Florin Funeral Chapel, 1053 East Napier Avenue, Benton Harbor, MI, 49022. Please share messages, memories or photos at www.florin.net.
Patricia and her late husband, Spencer, celebrated 60 loving years of marriage. They were members of the First Congregational Church of Benton Harbor. In addition to raising their two children Patricia was an active volunteer in her community. She loved golfing, gardening, and traveling to see her grandchildren. She was thrilled to learn at her 90th birthday party that she was going to be a Great Grandma. McKayla Clare and Oliver Thomas blessed her life in 2015.
Patricia was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Her husband, Spencer John Kohlmann and her sister, Joan Hardman Hans preceded her in death. She is survived by her son and daughter, Thomas Kohlmann (Sherry) of East Lansing, MI and Connie Kohlmann Wright (Johnnie), of Hendersonville, NC, Grandchildren Justin Wright (Laura), Ryan Kohlmann (Kelly), Kristin Wright Aggers (Jeremy) and Laura Kohlmann Preston (Tim), and Great Grandchildren McKayla Preston and Oliver Kohlmann, along with several nieces and nephews.

Juanita M. Birdyshaw, 89, of Buchanan, passed away on February 21, 2016 at Woodland Terrace, Niles. Juanita was born on November 14, 1926 to the late Houston and Iva Nowlin in Normandy, TN. On January 21, 1942 she married Barton Birdyshaw at a ceremony in Roseville, GA. Juanita retired from Electro-Voice in 1988 after 33 years of service. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Kent) Clayton of Buchanan and Janice (David) VanDyke of Bonita Springs, FL; grandchildren, Amy (Thomas) Lingle, Amber (Isaiah) Robinson, Kevin VanDyke and Kelly (Larry) Tajiri; seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, Houston and Iva; husband, Barton Birdyshaw; son, Jim Birdyshaw and two grandchildren.
